How to start a conversation in a language exchange

The first minute is the hardest. After that, it gets easier. Here is a simple way to begin.

Before you arrive

Write down three things about yourself: your name, where you live and why you are learning. Say them aloud twice at home. Pick two questions to ask. See questions to ask your language partner.

The opening

Greet them, say your name and ask theirs. Then tell them your level.

"Hello, I am Sam. Nice to meet you. I am a beginner, so please speak slowly."

This sets the pace. Your partner relaxes and you get time to think.

The first follow-ups

After names, try one of these:

  • "Where are you from?"
  • "How long have you lived here?"
  • "What do you do?"

Each has a natural next question. "Where are you from?" leads to "What is it like?" and "Do you go back?"

Agree how you will work

Say how you want to share the time. "Shall we do half an hour in each language?" is a good start. Ask whether they want corrections as you go or at the end.

When you get stuck

  • Say "How do you say...?" and use a word from your own language.
  • Describe the word with other words. "The thing you drink coffee from."
  • Ask your partner to repeat more slowly.
  • Point at something and ask what it is called.

Getting stuck is normal.

In a group

Listen first. Join in with a question rather than a statement. A short question is easy to answer and brings you into the talk. Read what to expect at your first table.

Keep it going

Ask follow-up questions and share your own answers. If the talk dries up, change topic. For ideas, read conversation topics for a language exchange.
