Last updated 1 October 2026. Everyone agrees to these when they join. Please read them: they are short.
1. Who we are
Nearly Fluent is run by Daniele Quartana (trading as Mooseship) in Guildford, UK. Contact: hello@nearlyfluent.com. By using Nearly Fluent you agree to these terms, our community guidelines and our privacy note.
2. What Nearly Fluent is, and is not
- Nearly Fluent is a free tool that helps adults find people nearby to practise languages with. It introduces members to each other. That is all.
- We do not run, supervise or attend meet-ups or language tables. Tables are organised by members, who are not our staff, agents or representatives.
- We do not carry out identity, criminal record or background checks, and we cannot promise that anyone is who they say they are or will behave well.
- Nearly Fluent is not a dating service. Romantic or sexual advances are not allowed.
- A Photo checked tick only means a member sent us a live selfie that matched their profile photo. "Met N members" counts meet-ups both people confirmed. Neither is an identity or background check.
3. Who can join
- You must be 18 or over and able to agree to these terms.
- One account per person, with true details about yourself. No fake profiles and no accounts for someone else.
- We may refuse, pause or close an account that breaks these terms or puts other people at risk.
4. Rules everyone follows
- Be respectful. No harassment, threats, hate speech, bullying or discrimination.
- Respect a no. If someone declines, does not reply or blocks you, leave it there.
- No spam, selling, advertising, recruiting, scams or requests for money.
- No sexual content, and nothing illegal, harmful or misleading.
- Do not share anyone else's personal details, photos or messages without their permission.
- Do not misuse the service: no scraping, automated accounts or attempts to break security.
5. Meeting people: your safety is your responsibility
Meeting someone from the internet carries risk. You decide whether, when and where to meet anyone, and you are responsible for your own safety and behaviour at any meet-up or table.
- Meet in a busy public place, such as a café, for at least the first few times. Never at someone's home.
- Tell a friend where you are going and who you are meeting. Arrange your own way there and back.
- Keep chatting in the app until you are comfortable. Never send money or share financial details.
- Leave whenever you feel uncomfortable. You never owe anyone a meeting.
- If you host a table, choose a public venue, check it is open and suitable, and follow the venue's own rules.

6. Reporting and emergencies
- Use Report on a profile, chat or table, or Block to stop someone contacting you. We review reports within 48 hours and may remove content or suspend accounts.
- If you are in danger, call 999. Report crimes to the police. We cooperate with the police where the law allows.
7. Your content
You keep ownership of what you post (your profile, photo and messages). You let us show it to other members to run the service. We may remove anything that breaks these terms. You can delete your account at any time from your profile.
8. Our responsibility to you
- Nearly Fluent is free and provided "as is". We try to keep it running and safe, but we cannot promise it will always be available or error-free.
- We are not responsible for what members say or do, online or in person, including at meet-ups and member-hosted tables. Any arrangement you make with another member is between you and them.
- As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss, damage or injury arising from meeting or dealing with other members, or from venues used for meet-ups and tables. Our total liability to you for anything else is limited to £50.
- Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our own negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Your legal rights as a consumer are not affected.
9. Changes
We may update these terms as Nearly Fluent grows. If we make an important change, we will tell you in the app or by email before it applies. If you keep using Nearly Fluent after that, you accept the new terms.
10. Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
