English conversation practice for expats in London and Surrey
You can read English well and still go quiet when someone asks you a question. That is normal after a move. Classes and apps train reading and listening. Speaking needs a real person who answers back.
What expats usually miss
Work English and street English are different. Colleagues speak carefully. People in a café speak fast. They join words together and use small phrases you were never taught. A native speaker can slow down, repeat and tell you what a phrase means.
A move to a new town can feel lonely at first. A practice partner can become a first friend.
How to find a partner near you
Nearly Fluent is a free app. You add the languages you speak and the language you are learning, which is English. The app shows people nearby who speak English and want to learn yours.
- Join free with your email. There is no password.
- Add your languages and your level. The English level quiz can help.
- Pick someone from the best fits and say hello.
- If they say yes, agree a public place and meet for a coffee.
Spend half the time in English and half in your language. Both of you practise, so nobody is only the teacher.
Or join a small table
A language table is a small group of four to six, hosted by a member. Book a place in the app and pay only for your own drink. You hear several voices, and you can listen first if you feel shy.

Make the hour useful
- Bring three questions. Ask about work, weekends or food.
- Write down new phrases after you leave. Use each one again within two days.
- Ask your partner to correct only the mistakes that repeat. The correction guide shows how to ask.
- Print the first table cards for topics and a plan for switching language.
Staying comfortable
Meet in a public place. Nearly Fluent is for adults aged 18 and over. Read the safety page before your first meet-up.
