How to practise speaking Japanese

You can learn Japanese words from an app. Speaking is a separate skill. It needs a real person and a bit of nerve. Here are ways to practise that fit a busy week.

Talk to a person

A conversation with a native speaker is the best practice. They reply, ask questions and make you think. In Surrey and London you can find Japanese speakers near you on Nearly Fluent. Read how to find a language partner.

Join a small table

A table of four to six people at a cafe is easier than a big class. You hear several voices and get time to speak. Join free to see who practises How near you. Or read how a language exchange evening works.

Practise alone

  • Describe your day aloud in Japanese while you walk or cook.
  • Read a short text aloud. Record it and listen back.
  • Repeat a song line or a short clip, matching the rhythm.
  • Write three sentences about your day and say them.

Prepare for a meeting

Write down five things you want to say. Learn the words you need for them. Bring a notebook. New to this? See language exchange for complete beginners.

After the meeting

Write five new words or phrases. Say them aloud twice. Use them at the next meeting.

Keep it regular

An hour a week with a person is a plan you can keep. Add short solo sessions on other days. Read how often to practise.
