Language exchange safety
Most language exchanges are friendly and uneventful. A few sensible habits keep it that way.
Before you meet
- Chat in the app first. Get a feel for the person.
- Check their profile and photo.
- Tell a friend where you are going and when.
Where to meet
Choose a public place with other people around, such as a café, in daylight or at a busy time. Language tables are held in public venues for this reason.
Keep your details private
You do not need to share your address, workplace or full name. On Nearly Fluent your email is never shown to other members, and we show your area, never your address.
During the meeting
- Pay for your own drink and keep hold of it.
- Leave whenever you want. You do not need a reason.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, go.
What we do
Nearly Fluent is for adults aged 18 and over, and every member agrees to the community guidelines. You can report or block someone from their profile or from a chat, and our team reviews reports.
If something goes wrong
If you are in danger, call 999. Otherwise, report the person in the app so we can act. Hosts can read the hosting section of the community guidelines.
