Language exchange for people new to London
Moving to a big city can feel lonely. A language exchange gives you a reason to talk and a regular time to meet. You practise a language and meet people who live nearby.
Why it helps
You do not need to be good at small talk. The conversation has a purpose. You help your partner with your language, and they help you with theirs. If the talk stalls, you can switch to a language lesson.
If you are learning English
Native English speakers want to practise your language in return. Spend half an hour in English and half an hour in yours. Ask them to explain idioms and how to say things politely. See English on Nearly Fluent.
If you are learning another language
London has speakers of most major languages. You may find a partner who is also new to the city. That can make the friendship easier.
How to start
- Pick one or two languages you speak and one you are learning.
- Write a short profile. Say your area, not your address.
- Say hello to one person who fits.
- Meet in a public place for a coffee.
Read how to find a language partner for message ideas.
What to say when you are new
You do not need long speeches. Short lines are enough.
- "I have just moved to London."
- "I live near Waterloo."
- "I am learning English, and I speak Portuguese."
People respond to the first one. Many of them were new here once.
What to do at a first table
Book a place, arrive a few minutes early and tell the host you are new. Ask which language comes first. After the hour, ask someone if they would like to meet again. A regular slot is how a first coffee becomes a friendship.
An example exchange
You: "I have just moved here. I am still learning where to go." Partner: "Welcome. Where do you live?" You: "Near Waterloo. And you?" Partner: "Not far. There is a good café near the station. Shall we try it next week?"
Make it a habit
Pick the same day each week. A regular slot turns a one-off coffee into a friendship. Read how often to practise.
Stay safe
Meet in public, tell a friend where you are going, and never send money. Read the safety guide.
