Language exchange in London: first-time tips
London has speakers of almost every language. That makes it easy to find a partner and easy to feel lost. These tips help you start well.
Start small
A big meetup can have fifty people and loud music. A small table of four to six is easier. You hear every voice and everyone gets a turn. Look for a group that says it is relaxed and welcoming to all levels.
Check the journey first
London is big. Check the route before you go and allow extra time. Choose a place near a station you already know. Arriving calm is better than arriving rushed.
Choose a public place
Meet in a cafe, pub or similar public space. Tell a friend where you are going and when you expect to be back. Read the safety guide.
Say your level
Tell people what you can do. "I am a beginner, please speak slowly" is a good opener. It sets the pace and nobody minds. See language exchange for complete beginners if you are new.
Prepare three lines
Write down your name, where you live in London and why you are learning. Say them aloud before you go. When it is your turn, you have something ready.
Split the time
Spend about half the time in each language. If you are in a group, make sure everyone who wants to speak gets a turn. Ask a question every few minutes.
Follow up
Message the people you liked the next day. Suggest a time and place for a second coffee. Regular meetings are where progress comes from. Read how often to practise.
What to say when you walk in
One line covers it: "Hi, I am Priya. It is my first time here." The host will tell you the plan and introduce you. Then add your languages: "I speak English and I am learning Italian."
An example exchange
Host: "Welcome, Priya. We start in Italian today. Is that all right?" Priya: "Yes, but I am a beginner." Host: "That is fine. Say what you can, and ask us if you are stuck." Priya: "Thank you. How do you say this?"
