French language exchange in London
Bonjour! If you want to practise French face to face in London, a language exchange is the simplest way: you help someone with your language, and they help you with French. No teacher, no fee.
How to find a French partner
Nearly Fluent is a free app for finding language partners in Surrey and London. Choose French as a language you speak or are learning, and the app shows members near you, with the best two-way fits first. Say hello, and if they reply, agree a time and a public place for a coffee.
Two ways to practise
- One to one. Meet a single partner for an hour, half in French and half in English.
- A small table. Join a group of around four to six people, hosted by a member, and book your place in the app. Everyone pays only for their own drink.

What to talk about
Easy topics keep a conversation going: food, travel, films, and the lovely tangle of French politeness (tu or vous?). For more ideas, see conversation topics for a language exchange.
Tips for your first meeting
- Agree the plan first: how long in each language, and whether you want corrections.
- Prepare two or three things to say about yourself.
- Bring a small notebook for new words.
- Be patient with yourself and kind to your partner. Everyone gets stuck.
New to this? Start with what a language exchange is and how an evening works.
Safe and free
Nearly Fluent is free and for adults aged 18 and over. You meet in public places, and your email is never shown to other members. Read the safety guide.
