French conversation practice in London
You can study French for years and still freeze when someone answers. Conversation practice fixes that. This page explains how to find it in London, for free, with a real person.
How it works
You are learning French and speak English. Someone nearby speaks French and wants to practise English. You swap. Nearly Fluent is a free app that finds these people near you.
- Add the languages you speak and the ones you are learning.
- See people nearby who fit, best fits first.
- Say hello. If they say yes, you chat in the app and agree where to meet.
- Meet in a public place for a coffee. Spend half the time in each language.
What a native speaker helps with in French
Nasal vowels and the r come from the back of the mouth. Many final letters are silent. A native speaker can tell you when you say one that should stay quiet.
Two ways to practise
One to one: meet a single partner for an hour. It is the quickest way to improve your speaking. You talk for most of the hour.
A small table: join four to six people at a cafe, hosted by a member. Book a place in the app. You hear several voices and have time to speak.
Before you go
- Write down three things to say about yourself.
- Say your level at the start, so your partner can pitch it right.
- Agree whether you want corrections as you go or at the end.
- Read what to expect at your first table.
Stay safe
Nearly Fluent is for adults aged 18 and over. Meet in public for first conversations and tell a friend where you are going. Read the safety guide.
